Digital Identity Fundamentals
Core concepts behind identity, wallets, and trusted document exchange in the European digital identity ecosystem.
The EUDI wallet is the EU's official digital identity wallet — one secure app to prove who you are and share trusted documents across Europe. Here's how the European Digital Identity Wallet works and what it means for businesses.
The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW, or EUDI wallet) is a free smartphone app that every EU member state must offer citizens, residents, and businesses. It lets you carry government-issued digital identity and official documents — an ID card, a mobile driving licence, diplomas, or business credentials — in one secure place.
Instead of copying documents or over-sharing personal data, you present cryptographically signed verifiable credentials and disclose only the specific attributes a service needs, such as "over 18" without revealing your date of birth.
Three roles make the EUDI wallet work. Issuers (governments, banks, universities, employers) add trusted verifiable credentials to a person's wallet. Holders store those credentials on their phone and stay in full control. Verifiers request and instantly check a credential's authenticity — online or in person — without contacting the issuer.
Because every wallet, issuer, and verifier follows the same EU standards, a credential issued in one member state is trusted and verifiable across the whole European Union.
Companies gain a European Business Wallet (EUBW): the organisational counterpart of the citizen EUDI wallet. Businesses can prove their identity, hold licences and registrations, and access cross-border digital services quickly and in a trusted, EU-approved way.
With LutraID, organisations can already issue verifiable credentials to EUDI wallets and verify credentials presented by customers — building EUDI-ready flows today, ahead of full national rollouts.
The EUDI wallet is mandated by eIDAS 2.0, the updated EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services. It requires every member state to provide the wallet, extends digital identity to the private sector, and sets the common standards that make wallets, issuers, and verifiers interoperable across Europe.
