Login with EUDI: The New Way to Sign Into Digital Platforms Is Coming

Where will people first experience the EUDI Wallet?
As you may have heard, European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDIW) are coming for EU citizens by the end of 2026. These wallets will provide a digital identity and a place to store, receive, and share digital documents and credentials.
One of the first places many people in Europe may experience the EUDIW will be very familiar: a login button.
In the coming years, we can expect to see “Login with EUDI” appear on digital platforms, similar to how we already use login options from banks, digital certificates, or large identity providers today, but without the need to create another account.
The difference is that users will be able to log in with their mobile identity wallet and share verified personal data in a secure, selective, and privacy-preserving way.
How is this going to work behind the scenes?
One of the first and most important credentials in the EUDIW will be Person Identification Data (PID).
PID represents verified personal identity data, such as a person's name, date of birth, and other identity attributes. Instead of uploading documents, creating another account, or going through manual identity checks, users will be able to share only the data required for a specific service.
This means that identity verification can happen directly within the login flow, in the background, and always with the user's consent.
When will this become mandatory?
The rollout of the EUDIW follows a clear timeline:
- 20 May 2024 – The revised eIDAS 2.0 Regulation entered into force, establishing the legal framework for the European Digital Identity ecosystem.
- By 24 December 2026 – All EU Member States must provide at least one EUDIW to their citizens and residents.
- By December 2027 – Regulated sectors, financial institutions requiring Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), and designated digital gatekeepers must accept EUDIWs for authentication and identity verification.
This includes sectors such as banks, insurance providers, payment services, energy companies, utilities, telecommunications providers, and other high-compliance platforms.
As adoption grows, we also expect many other digital services to support identity verification with EUDIW as part of their login and onboarding flows.
What will this look like in practice?
To make this easier to understand, we created a short demo showing how Login with EUDI could work in practice.
